Q. I was just diagnosed with a Carbohydrate Intolerance, and there is a strong genetic component of Diabetes in my family. What can I do to help ensure I do not get diabetes at an early age. I am 29 yrs old, 5'8 and weight 246 lbs. Please help..
Thanks |
| A. You should meet with your doctor to discuss your concerns and then plan a weight loss diet. Losing weight is the first step in your prevention of diabetes.
I would recommend a low-fat, high fiber diet with generous amounts of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish, whole grains and enriched grains and low-fat dairy products. Include nuts and dry beans also in your diet.
Limit your fats and oils high in saturated fat and trans fatty acids. |

Q. What meals can I prepare to help lower my over all blood pressure. The last time I was checked I was borderline with high blood pressure. What can I do.....Thank you in advance.

| A. Eat a diet high in whole grain products like cereals, breads pasta and rice and one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables and lowfat dairy products.
Include skinless poultry, fish and nuts.
Follow a diet that is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat.
Lower your intake of red meats, sweets and sugar containing beverages.
Some tips to reduce salt and sodium in your diet include:
Use reduced or no salt added versions of products. Buy fresh or plain frozen vegetables or canned vegetables with no salt added.
Limit your intake of cured meats such as ham, bacon and foods in brine like pickles, olives and sauerkraut. Use spices and herbs to flavor your food rather than the salt shaker. Cook your pasta and rice without salt in the water. Rinse canned foods such as tuna to remove some sodium. |

Q. Hi Tricia. I have multiple sclerosis, and I have been placed on a restrictive diet to help lessen the symptoms. One of the major"no-no's" is any food that includes hydrogenated oil's. I've noticed that only a handful of the Lean Cuisine meals do not contain any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Why is this? |
| A. Most of our Lean Cuisine products use canola oil rather than partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Please check the ingredient statement on the pkg for those meals you can enjoy. |

Q. Tricia, I work the midnight shift but I don't have a set schedule. It's very hard for me to eat correctly especially when I'm up during the day, I lay down for a quick nap, and then I'm up all night! I fell like I'm eating 24 hours a day! I go through this at least 2 times per week. Any suggestions???? |
| A. Try to plan a set schedule of meals and snacks just as if it was a normal day for you..Eating a variety of balanced meals will help with your sleep difficulties and you will awake more rested.
