Breast Cancer Self-Awareness
Early detection is still the best way to combat breast cancer, and you have the resources right at your fingertips! Just like eating healthful foods, being aware of your breast health by checking for symptoms of the disease is doing something good for yourself — in the best way possible.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recommends the following tips in order to learn more about breast cancer self-awareness:
First, know your risk for breast cancer. Talk to your family about your family health history and talk to your health care provider about your personal risk of breast cancer.
Second, get screened. Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you, especially if you are at a higher risk. Make sure to have clinical breast exams at least every three years starting at age 20, and every year starting at 40. Also have a mammogram done every year starting at age 40.
Third, know what is normal for you. Know how your breasts normally look and feel, and if you notice any changes, report them to your health care provider right away.
Fourth, make healthy lifestyle choices that may reduce your risk of breast cancer. While you may already live a healthy lifestyle, always try to maintain a healthy weight and add exercise to your daily routine. Limiting your alcohol intake can also help reduce your risk of breast cancer.
